Question

I’m a 16.4 handicap, and I struggle to hit in front of the ball and keep a loose grip pressure. Do you have any drills that can help? Thanks!

Bobby’s Answer

Thanks for the question Taylor.

Your question addresses many different points of a golf swing. First, having light grip pressure leads to an effective set up of the rest of your shot. As I detail in the Training DVDs, hitting in front of the ball requires a smooth sequence of the following mechanics:

  1. Load
  2. Lag
  3. Workhouse

These three movements all work in unison and lead to maximum impact.

Second, grip pressure is what we use to increase load, which, sequentially increases lag in downswing as well as workhorse. Many golfers have too tight of a grip to properly load the club, and because they are unable to properly load the club, they usually hit a poor shot because they are unable to achieve a four inch in front swing bottom.

To achieve appropriate grip pressure, imagine that you have “oily wrists”, meaning that they are very light and move freely. The key is to be loose enough in your grip that your wrists move freely, but don’t let the club slip out of your hand. As a result, you will have more control of the club, and will be able to properly use load, lag and workhorse in your swing.

To see what happens when your grip is too tight and get a drill to practice, watch the video below.

  1. This is something. Not just a claim, the swing was described clearly by giving credible actions. Tomorrow it is time to test it.
