Question

I can do it right with the practice swing…but not with a ball. What am I doing wrong?

Bobby’s Answer

The ball bound factor happens to every golfer, even me.  When I make a practice swing, I can move my swing bottom WELL in front of our Dynamic #2 average of 4 inches.  But when I hit a ball, my swing bottom will move back, closer to the ball.

One of the ways that we work on moving the swing bottom forward is the Aiming Point concept.  I’ve practiced this so many times, and it’s one of the most helpful training challenges I would practice when I wasn’t hitting the ball well, because I knew after I practiced the Aiming Point concept, my ball striking would improve.

  1. Bobby, on the downswing, sometimes my right knee moves towards the ball instead of towards the target (I’m a right handed golfer). When this happens it causes me to hit the ball on the hosel. What drill can I do to get my lower body moving towards the target instead of towards the ball. If I could repeat the correct move my right heel would stay down longer giving me a more “ground up” golf swing instead of upper body dominant. Thank you. Mike Kottwitz, Dallas, Texas

  2. I have been working on the aiming point.
By focusing “4 inches” in front of the ball. My ball compression, contact, and distance has dramatically improved!
I am looking for help with the aiming point with my “woods”.
With my 3 & 5 woods I have been focusing on my aiming point right behind the ball and miss is a pull or hook.
I have been looking 4″ behind the ball with my driver.
I am “pulling” my driver. This was not a problem before.
Do I need the make my aiming point in a different place?
Is there a drill or different swing thought I need not pull-hook my woods and driver?

  3. Good. But what helps me most is to consciously elevate my take away and then attempt to actually hit down on the ball rather than to scoop it. And to follow through into the grass.

  4. Bobby, Why won’t your DVD ‘s work in my Apple desk top computer ? Can I return them for ones that will work. I’ve only opened one of three. I’m surprised as so many people have Mac Desktop Computers.

  5. Great answer. Have the same problem. As a PGA Life Member, Playing in Chapter Pro-Ams became embarrassing. When I focused on striking at an aim-spot in front, and slightly inside my intended line; Shot even par last week. Thank you. Terry Adams, PGA Life Member

  6. Thanks for the reminder Bobby! You’ve got my great practice swing on video. Still working on Impact!

It sounds and looks solid. I’ve always tried to keep my head steady, not still. It seems to help me not to get ball bound. Thanks

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.
