Question

Can you give me some tips on reading longer putts?

Bobby’s Answer

Reading putts is critical to being a better putter.  Playing in pro-am’s, I see amateurs start to under-read the break as the putt gets longer.  Learning to properly read breaks, especially on longer putts, can help you avoid 3 putting and IMMEDIATELY  start to lower your score.

  1. My son seems to always push the ball to the right. even with irons. what might be the cause? Not a sclice but a push.

    1. The most common cause of the “Push ” to the right is the slide forwards of the body during the downswing .

  2. Well, I am new to golf as my mentor died last year. I have clubs and I plan to play again this year. I am getting better and my shots are longer and my putting is improving.

  3. Nice tip, except for the last statement about walking around the entire hole. For the vast majority of amateurs that’s not going to make a big difference and it will just slow down play even more than it is now. How many times have you seen an amateur labor over a long putt only to leave it way long or blow it way past??? A better suggestion would be for players to look at the entire green on their way to the ball so they have a general sense of the break in the putt.

  4. When I try to hit a fade or a draw, do I make my aiming point (divot) 4 inches to the right or left of the ball?

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.
