Question

I’m confused how to hit my irons dead center. Can you please give me advice?

Bobby’s Answer

Well Julian, the first step is understanding where you are hitting the ball on the club face. To do this, you can use face tape, Dr. Scholl’s foot powder and a variety of other products.

Once you do this you will be able to understand where you are hitting the ball, which might reveal some tendencies in your golf swing.

For example, if you find that you are hitting the ball in the heel, then you should check your distance to the ball, make sure that you are balanced, and that your hands aren’t separating from your body.

The point of making any sort of adjustments should always be one thing: consistency.

I explain more in the video below.

To better impact,

Bobby

  1. I have trouble with my 58 degree wedge around the green. I shank it most of the time anywhere from 10 to 25 feet. What’s my problem. Thanks

  2. Bobby when I try to get more lag I tend to leave my hands wide open causing right lateral shots also shanks. I am loosing confidence in my swing. Any ideas on how to consistently hit with a square clubface?

  3. Mr. Clampett,

I am 68 years of age, and have been playing golf for over 50 years. I am a single digit handicapper, but now I am routinely shanking the ball with my bladed irons. I am hitting my driver, fairway metals and the hybrids reasonably well, but these shanks with the irons are making me very frustrated. I can slow down my swing, but then am only getting about two-thirds the normal distance with the irons. Any suggestions? Thanks!

“In the Clampett’s Corner you did with Bill Glasson, he agreed with you that Clubhead Lag is the key to great golf, but he mentioned that faster handle speed was the way to achieve it. Any drills to ingrain that thought?”
