Question

Do I Need To Take A Divot?

“Is a divot really necessary? I’ve watched your DVDs and they have helped me a lot, but I still don’t take divots. Can you explain?”

Bobby’s Answer

Swing Bottom Is More Important Than Divot

Welcome to this week’s Clampett’s Corner- with me, Bobby Clampett!

Great question, Gary. You’ll play and practice on all different kinds of grass and surfaces, which doesn’t always allow you to take a divot. But your swing bottom should always be 4 inches in front of the ball. I explain how to do that in this video.

Don’t forget to leave your questions in the comments! See you next week.

Comments

  1. Very fine instruction video ,Bobby ,I often play on firm low grass and this occurrence is familiar to me :a divot too far forwards slows down the clubhead too much .I just follow your sound advice

  2. Hi Bobby, I purchased your Impact Zone training system and have significantly improved my game since starting. My first nine out I shout a 39. That same week I played 18 and shot a 75 (my lowest score ever). I’ve been averaging mid to upper 80’s, and on more occasions than I care to remember, finding the 90’s.

Thank you for your program and for addressing the real issues. Since my 75, I’ve posted 86, 79, 87, 80, and 80. I’m more excited about playing now than I have ever been.

    Again, thank you.
    Mark

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.
