Question

Hi Bobby,

Really enjoyed your videos and all the information. I have a question about release. Do you prefer an active release using aiming point, or do you prefer a float loading action, where in effect you never try to release; it just occurs naturally?

Bobby’s Answer

Great question, Thomas!

Release is such a critical part of how to play your best golf. In order to get to Dynamic #1 The Flat Lead Wrist, the release has to be late.

Otherwise, with an early release, that lead wrist is going to break down.

This leads to:

  1. lack of control
  2. too much loft
  3. shifting plane line

So, in order to have that consistent, late release that leads to greater distance and consistency, many amateurs make the wrong move and try to actively control release. When in fact- if you look at someone like Jordan Spieth, who has possibly the latest release in the history of the game- centrifugal force and body-turn is what actually causes the release to happen naturally.

I explain in today’s video:

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.
