Question

On the greenside bunker shot- is it a pitch shot, or is it a full shot? How do you know which shot to use?

Bobby’s Answer

That’s a great question, Brian! The key here is backspin, which requires speed, which requires more of a full swing… which begs the question… how to control the distance? Ahhh, so many people have trouble with the greenside bunker- but it doesn’t have to be that way. Watch today’s video for my explanation.

  1. Y can’t some of these game improvement vids be done in closed captioning for your viewers that are deaf or hard of hearing ???

  2. When the sand is hard packed (It’s more dirt than sand !) at my home course here at CANNES MANDELIEU (FRANCE) ,I use a club with much less bounce !the 51° gap wedge is fine .I compensate for the lesser loft by opening much more the face and tke my stance at 45°of the target .Of course I play the shot like BOBBY shows ,a full swing with a lot of speed

  3. I have diminished vision in my left eye which causes me difficulty at times in alignment . Do you have a recommendation that I can incorporate into my Aim Point setup?

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.
