Question

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.

Bobby’s Answer

Gary, this is also something  have struggled with. In fact, many Tour Players have had the same problem. The key here is mobility, which means keeping movement anyway you can to ease tension and free yourself up. I explain in today’s video:

Comments

  1. I am a right hand player and more often than not my drives and long fairway wood shots start out exactly where I am aiming but eventually fade to the right which often gives me a challenging next shot. Can you give me a suggestion or two to eliminate this fade of mine.

  2. I don’t trap or compress the ball. I seem to sweep the top of the grass without taking a divisor. Any advice for this?
By the way, you hit the greatest shot I ever saw, at the armature at Planefield N. J., that high hook onto the green on the first extra home. I really rooted for you that day.

Hi Bobby,

Really enjoyed your videos and all the information. I have a question about release. Do you prefer an active release using aiming point, or do you prefer a float loading action, where in effect you never try to release; it just occurs naturally?

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

It’s hard to learn to trust this lag as I move from wedges to the driver. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.
