Question

“In the Clampett’s Corner you did with Bill Glasson, he agreed with you that Clubhead Lag is the key to great golf, but he mentioned that faster handle speed was the way to achieve it. Any drills to ingrain that thought?”

Bobby’s Answer

In one of my previous Clampett’s Corners, Bill Glasson agreed that clubhead lag is the key to great golf and talked about the concept of handle speed being a great way to achieve it.  That’s another way at looking at faster clubhead speed, a key to greater distance without losing accuracy.

Clubhead lag is one of my favorite topics and Bill is absolutely right – producing lag will unleash the power you need to make par (or better!) on those long Par 5’s.

It’s a fact that increasing the amount of lag on the downswing increases clubhead speed at impact. What is critical to understand is that when your clubhead speed increases, your handle speed has to increase as well to be propelled ahead of the body at impact.  That maintains the flat lead wrist through impact (Dynamic #1 in my training system), insuring greater control and distance.

So, you might be thinking: “how can I improve my handle speed?”. Well, I have a simple, easy drill that you can and should do over and over to add distance to your swing. Watch today’s video for a demonstration.

And to further understand about how to both increase your quality AND amount of lag in your swing, check out my training system dedicated to Clubhead Lag!

  1. Bobby –

I’ve been watching your drills for some time and I think that this is the best one you’ve come up with to demostrate how to create lag..

  2. I don’t understand handle speed. Your video swing is too fast. Can you show us in slow motion what the club head is doing in relation to the handle? “The workhorse delivering the arms and hands”

    1. All THE measurements made show That THE hands ,therefore THE handle OF THE club goes THE speed OF ” g ” which is THE speed an object goes in Free fall without any résistance from THE air ( 9,81 m/s) .What gives THE speed OF THE clubhead is THE combination OF the fast hip turn and THE release OF THE club !

  3. Hi Bobby: I’m a left hand golfer. In my set-up at address, should I set my plane to the right or to the left.

    Thanks:

    Roy MacMillan

  4. Bobby, I am hitting all my shots high, irons and woods alike. Even using an 8.5 lofted drive I hit really high shots. What is the cause of this?
