Question

Tell us about Dustin Johnson’s wrist position at the top of the swing. It seems to help me, what’s your opinion?

Bobby’s Answer

Well Steve,

There isn’t much to say about that, mostly because I’m not a style based teacher. But also, think about this:

People believe that DJ’s wrist position is the key to hitting MONSTER drives, but at the 1992 Masters everyone was saying that Fred Couples’ position was the answer-but it was completely different!

So, what’s really going on?

While both pros have completely different swings, they both make great impact.

So the real answer is this: if something helps your swing-stick with it! The key issue is if you can sustain the lag and use the workhorse to create dynamic impact.

  1. This time of year a lot of my practice is off mats. How do I practice the 2nd dynamic when the club bounces off the mat?

    1. Good question Dave, My instructor, Bernie, developed impact powder and can be used on mats to make sure that the swing bottom is forward. I don’t know of anyway to identify the swing bottom point when hitting off mats.
