Question

Brian Can’t Take a Divot

“Bobby I do not take a divot on any of my shots and cannot seem to no matter what I do. I therefore conclude that is why my distances are not as long as any of my playing partners. Can you recommend a drill to overcome this so I can get the 4″ ahead of the ball lowest point of the arc?”

Bobby’s Answer

If you can’t take a divot, the very best drill I can think of is the Tic Tac Toe drill. Watch the video for my explanation and a demonstration of the drill.

    1. Hi Harry, here’s a great video on our YouTube channel, where Bobby explains the Tic Tac Toe drill in more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQvy8ePLvsU

There are tons of other great videos on our YouTube channel, so be sure to check them out! And of course, even more detail on how to achieve proper impact (and ultimately play your best golf) can be found in the DVDs and The Impact Zone book.

  3. Bobby, I’m making ball first contact and my swing bottom is 4 inches in front, but my divots are very deep. Is this a problem?

  4. I can not feel the shaft engage the trigger finger at the top of the backswing. Can you help with this issue?

  5. If u look in front of the ball will this help your swing bottom, also need a drill to keep back angle during the swing?

  6. Bobby: I can make practice swings and they are basically picture perfect. When I address the ball and make an actual swing I find myself falling back and my forward foot comes off the ground. What drill can I use to get the proper weigh transfer to stop lifting that foot.

I am struggling to maintain a consistent golf swing. When I practice my swing, I feel great, but when I go to the range or the Tee Box, I can’t hit the ball consistently. Do you know what the problem is and can you recommend any drills to fix this?

Bobby, how to you judge the distance that the ball will carry out of the sand? Is there a formula you use to judge the amount of back swing?

Hi Bobby,

I recall during the Porter Cup you gave me a tip on pitch shots… to wait until you feel the weight of the club in your right index finger before pulling down. It works to this day! But I never did learn how to hit down on the ball and take that divot after the strike. So, I think you’re onto something, but at age 78 I’m not sure if I can learn it. But I’m willing to give it a try, so any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Bobby, I notice your right foot slips minutely clockwise as you initiate the downswing. I think this is actually a good drill to practice. Keeps the right heel down and facilitates a slide rather than a spin into the downswing.

I can’t seem to find a starter for my backswing. I stand over the shot too long, and I seem to freeze there. I’m 76 years old and play to a 12 index.
