Dedicated, highly motivated and innovative are all words that have been used when speaking about this young executive and coach. Since his early days at the University of Nevada, Dedric Holmes has been a leader. A 1995 graduate, Dedric was a member of the highly successful football program that made the transition from division 1A to division 1 in the early 1990’s. The under-budgeted program was able to win back-to- back conference titles and become the first division 1A team to move up to a major bowl game in the inaugural season. After college Dedric moved east to become one of the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) first African-American males in a full-time management position as its Coordinator of Junior Golf and Minority Affairs. Beyond being responsible for managing all of the USGA minority initiatives during his two years at the USGA, Dedric was heavily involved with the USGA Foundation, which granted more than one million dollars annually during that time. After spending two years in New Jersey, the California native moved back to the golden state to become the Executive Director of Pro Kids Golf Academy and Learning Center in San Diego. Pro Kids has been recognized as one of the best junior golf programs in the world. Under Dedric’s watch at Pro Kids Golf Academy, tremendous growth was realized in annual giving, student participation and golf development, course improvements, golf course revenue, professional staffing and national exposure in the 15 short months Dedric managed the golf course and related participant programs. Since Dedric’s departure, Pro Kids Golf Academy has been recognized as a model facility for The PGA TOUR and, The First Tee Youth-Development Program. Quickly being recognized as one of the few people in the world who has worked on the Foundation side of reviewing and awarding major gifts, and on the local side of creating and running highly successful programs at the local level, in 1998 Dedric was ask to join the national staff of The First Tee as Director of Programs by the Commissioner of The PGA TOUR Inc., and former Chairman of the World Golf Foundation, Tim Finchem. Dedric was instrumental in creating national and international guidelines, student programs, coach education content and training polices for the over 202 First Tee facilities in operation or in production around the world. One of the lasting legacies Dedric will leave behind at The First Tee is a program called Life Skills Experience, which has become the focal point of The First Tee organization. Dedric managed a team of business professionals and technical consultants in the creation, implementation and research of a multi-million dollar international program geared towards providing First Tee students with opportunities that will enhance their lives both on and off the golf course. Dedric is also responsible for the development of the internationally recognized The First Tee coach training program that has trained over 2,200 coaches around the world on more effective ways to teach golf through a student centered model with over half being golf professionals. Preparing coaches to coach and become the best possible coach they can be for their students has been a major focus of Dedric work over the last 5-years with The First Tee.
